Do not be detracted by the emotional reviews
This is a long review that I hope will help you make an informed decision as to get this game or not.
Ive been playing iGammon since the very first release. I thought it was the best version of computer backgammon available then, and I feel it has just been getting better and better.
Does it cheat? Honestly I dont think so. I consider myself to be an above average player. Over a multi-point match I usually beat everyone I know. This game beats me about 50% of the time. Im not used to losing this much. There have been times when I was also convinced that the dice were fixed. It just felt too common for the computer opponent to get exactly what it needed. If it is cheating however, its doing a poor job of it, because I still win about 50% of the time. I think its a challenging opponent and can be frustrating when the dice work against you, but this happens with real dice too.
Now, lets move on to giving a true review of this App!
It is the best computer backgammon game I have ever played.
As I stated, the opponent is a real challenge. I have to carefully consider all my moves. I have to play very tight to squeak out a match win. Any mistake and the computer will make me pay for it.
The interface is clear and easy to use. The undo feature is well thought out. The overall quality is solid and enjoyable.
The game has almost all the features I can imagine wanting, but its the new tutorial mode that I really love. I have the tutor set to the fullest level. So when the computer feels Im making even the smallest of mistakes, it tells me about it. It will pop up maybe 2-3 times a in a game for me. I consider its advice and have learned to play a better game. When I take the advice, I win maybe 70-80% of the time. If I ignore the advice and go with my own move, I will usually lose that game.
This is really an excellent computer backgammon game. Although I can also get frustrated, I dont believe the computer is cheating, its just a very good opponent. The new tutorial feature is fantastic.
The only feature I would like to see added is a history of statistics. For example, the number of games/matches won and lost. The number of gammons and backgammons. Maybe some fun stats like number of doubles accepted/rejected, or how many times youve won/lost with only 1 piece remaining.
