MODES OF PLAY

There are two modes of play: "table stakes" or "match play".

In TABLE STAKES, you and your opponent start with an equal number of chips. The goal is to collect all the chips before your opponent does. Use the doubling cube to increase the stakes. If you play with the "Jacoby rule", gammons and backgammon dont count unless the cube has been turned. If you play with the "Beavers rule", a player who accepts a double may immediately redouble and still keep the cube.

In MATCH PLAY, the goal is to be the first player to reach a specified total number of points. Use the doubling cube to increase the stakes. The "Crawford rule" takes the doubling cube out of play for one game when a player gets to within one point of winning.

You offer a double by sliding the cube over to your opponents side of the board. Opponent can accept the double by pressing "Take" (the game continues at twice the previous stakes), or reject the double by pressing "Pass" (he loses the game and must pay the previous stakes.)

----------------

COMPUTER PLAYER

The computer AI is VERY strong. There are two levels of play: Average and Strong. Both are fun and challenging.

Pros and cons of iGammon app for iPhone and iPad

iGammon app good for

Much improved, dice are now fair. Could still look nicer, but otherwise its great
i dont know how it was fixed... but the dices arent rigged this app is good
Dont listen to the whiners. This app plays very well. Much better than other apps. If they cant beat it its lack of skill not fixed dice. I only wish it kept stats so I could see my rank against cautious, wild, expert etc. The fact that you can play opponents with different styles is also excellent. Expert plays a very good back game!
Excellent app. Dont listen to complainers. Ive played against Jellyfish (look it up) and it always seems like the dice are fixed. But on that game like this one the dice are not fixed. You just need to play more carefully. I, too would like to see stats.
1- The iPhone should resign if the game is mathematically over. 2- In Auto Finish mode, the iPhone should not make decisions for me by making a double or resigning. Other than that, still a great game
This is a long review that I hope will help you make an informed decision as to get this game or not. Ive been playing iGammon since the very first release. I thought it was the best version of computer backgammon available then, and I feel it has just been getting better and better. Does it cheat? Honestly I dont think so. I consider myself to be an above average player. Over a multi-point match I usually beat everyone I know. This game beats me about 50% of the time. Im not used to losing this much. There have been times when I was also convinced that the dice were fixed. It just felt too common for the computer opponent to get exactly what it needed. If it is cheating however, its doing a poor job of it, because I still win about 50% of the time. I think its a challenging opponent and can be frustrating when the dice work against you, but this happens with real dice too. Now, lets move on to giving a true review of this App! It is the best computer backgammon game I have ever played. As I stated, the opponent is a real challenge. I have to carefully consider all my moves. I have to play very tight to squeak out a match win. Any mistake and the computer will make me pay for it. The interface is clear and easy to use. The undo feature is well thought out. The overall quality is solid and enjoyable. The game has almost all the features I can imagine wanting, but its the new tutorial mode that I really love. I have the tutor set to the fullest level. So when the computer feels Im making even the smallest of mistakes, it tells me about it. It will pop up maybe 2-3 times a in a game for me. I consider its advice and have learned to play a better game. When I take the advice, I win maybe 70-80% of the time. If I ignore the advice and go with my own move, I will usually lose that game. This is really an excellent computer backgammon game. Although I can also get frustrated, I dont believe the computer is cheating, its just a very good opponent. The new tutorial feature is fantastic. The only feature I would like to see added is a history of statistics. For example, the number of games/matches won and lost. The number of gammons and backgammons. Maybe some fun stats like number of doubles accepted/rejected, or how many times youve won/lost with only 1 piece remaining.

Some bad moments

Rigged for sure! Played 40+ games on the cautious setting. Came real close to winning 90% of the time till comp rolls doubles multiple times in a row. Very frustrating!!
I do not believe that the dice is selected with the hazard... I never saw a so lucky opponent!!! Je ne crois pas que les dés soit choisis au hazard... je nai jamais vu un opposant si chaceux!!!
Dont waste your time with this frustranting game the dice are completely fixed!! The computer player gets miraculous roles nearly every time. Ive yet to see an opponent piece forced to be left single when casting off. 100% of the time when the computer doubles or counter doubles the next role a piece of mine is taken off. Its lucky its free because its not worth 2 cents. Consider it deleted!!!
Great game play but the rolls the computer gets are a joke, try it and you will see, if you play expert they get expert +++ rolls
Game works good, but the amount of doubles and exact number rolls is incredible. Played multiple games and the computer will roll doubles repeatively gets very frustrating.Too much money. Not fun to play.If the creator thinks its so fair why not have some sort of dice roll counter, I guarantee the computer will have signifigantly higher numbers every time.
Context: I have played backgammon for approx 30 years. I know a little bit about playing, and I have to say this app is incredibly disappointing! Computer need a 6? Computer rolls a 6. That happens so often if boggles the mind. Stay AwAy!
